Best thing to do here is describe the extra-ordinarily rare type of belt these 2 snaps to which these were once attached (an example of which is shown in the photos]. The original leather belt had a Moroccan finish and incorporated a folded iron wire hook for adjusting. A two-piece cast brass plate, 90mm by 50mm, that had a rectangular "male" portion with letters "CS". There were attached to the belt by circular brass loops 2 sword suspending straps each having a SNAP, OR SWORD DROP, HOOK; these had the cast decoration of a snake. There was an S shaped brass suspension hook, crudely cast also in the form of a snake, attached at a brass belt loop. The longer of the two straps utilizes a lacquered iron adjusting buckle.
The surviving " reptilian" in form hooks offered here are in fine patina, and both have their riveted iron springs intact. These sword drop hooks once hung from one of the rarest of all Confederate general service belts. These belts were probably furnished early in the war, with a Memphis Novelty Works sword. Go find another pair! [pe][ph:L]
