This is an old hand-forged broad axe (or hewing axe), commonly used in 18th- and 19th-century American timber framing and log construction to square logs into flat beams.
This one features a wide, heavy blade measuring 13” at the cutting edge. One side of the blade is completely flat front to back while the other side is slightly offset where the iron was wrapped around to form a handle socket. The 30” long handle shows a few worm holes but remains solid.
Carpenters and homesteaders used these traditional tools for scoring and dressing logs when building log cabins, timber-frame houses, and barns. [jet] [ph:L]
