Presented here is an original, regulation French Model 1771 angular socket bayonet, a highly desirable and historically significant edged weapon from the era of the American Revolution. This specific pattern represents a major leap in military technology, being “one of the earliest to employ” a basal rotating locking ring located at the very rear of the socket. This innovative locking mechanism positively secured the bayonet to the musket’s under-the-barrel lug, ensuring the weapon would not dislodge during the rigors of hand-to-hand combat—a reliable design that “remained in use in Europe and America until the late 19th century”.

This example shows a dull finish with scattered oxidation as shown. Locking ring is complete and functional. Manufacturer’s stamp is present on the lower blade flat.  Point has been formed into a more aggressive profile than initially designed and shows moderate pitting.  Blade measures 13.1” while the socket measures 2.7”.
