This accoutrement is an original, angular socket bayonet made for the US Flintlock Musket Model 1808 and transition piece for the Model 1812 longarm.
The triangular blade style is of the Model 1795, with a slightly thicker neck configuration. Bayonet exhibits a spear shape and included no locking ring at the socket.
This specimen is 18.6” long overall with a 15” long blade. Has a 3.25” long socket and a clear “JNUS” is stamped into the flat shank. The letters “JN” are slightly smaller and likely identify the government inspector. Blade bears a semi-bright finish with scattered areas of darker oxidation and peppery pitting. No edge nicks. Blade has a 6½” long narrow crude flute at the tip area. A split in the mortise slot where the socket first passes over the lug is noted and shown – possibly an intentional cut given its clean nature. A small “A” sub-inspection stamp is noted on the side of the socket.
A rare and nice bayonet for the Jeffersonian Period or War of 1812 arms collector. [cm][ph:L]
