This is the Krag – Jorgensen bayonet used on the model 1892 Krag rifle. It is the first knife-bayonet issued in the U.S.
The unsharpened blade is bright and very clean. It meas. approx. 11 and 13/16 inches long with a central fuller that is approx. 8.00 inches long. Ricasso is marked “US” on one side and “1908” on the other. Edge has one tiny nick that can be felt rather than seen. Overall the blade is excellent.
The hilt has a bird head iron pommel and a flat iron guard. The wood grips are in very good condition and held in place by two iron rivets. Mortise and button attachment works well. Hilt is in overall very nice condition.
The scabbard is the Type 2 introduced in 1895. The front side shows approx. 98% of the original blued finish, however the reverse side only has about 80% of the original blue, with the exposed 20% showing red surface rust. Of course this can easily be cleaned off and if oiled should not return for a while. [ad]
