This is a very nice example of the Type No. II bayonet for US Navy Rifle Model 1870 in Hardin’s terminology. The blade is in the bright and free of nicks, and has a good point. The brass hilt and scabbard mounts match with a medium patina. The black leather scabbard body had nice color and surface with no bends or breaks, just typical scratches and dings from use. The frog stud is in place on the upper mount.

The hilt preserves nice detail to the scaled grip and anchor and cannon motif on the pommel. The markings are good: USN /GGS / 1870 on one side of the ricasso and AMES MFG CO. CHICOPEE, MASS, a tad light, but legible, on the other.

These were adopted along with the Remington rolling block rifle on the recommendation of Dahlgren’s 1869 board to select a breechloading arm to replace the muzzleloaders still in service. This is a good example of a regulation US Navy arm that was carried around the globe.  [SR] [ph:L]
