This bayonet would have been issued with the M1835 flintlock or possibly a conversion musket. While minor changes were evident on the M1835, M1840 and M1842 muskets, this particular bayonet did not change and was the standard to be used on each.
The bayonet’s triangular blade measures 17.5” and ‘US’ is stamped on the face flat. The bayonet has a dark patina with patches of oxidation on the blade and socket. The socket measures 2 5/8” with a ‘zig-zag’ mortise. The socket ring fits loose and moves smoothly. There are few knicks on the socket near the blade shoulder. The locking ring is intact with original screw. [mk] [ph:L]
