This bayonet would have been issued with the M1835 flintlock or possibly a conversion musket. While minor changes were evident on the M1835, M1840 and M1842 muskets, this particular bayonet did not change and was the standard to be used on each.
The bayonet’s triangular blade measures 17 ½” and ‘US’ is stamped on the face flat. The bayonet has a muted pewter tone with minimal discoloration. The socket measures 2 ¾” with a ‘zig-zag’ mortise. The socket ring fits loosely and retains its original screw. There are nicks on the socket’s side elbow and along the edge of the crux. Number “2” is stamped on the outside and circled in marker that can easily be removed. [mk] [ph:L]
