This is an original Model 1855 socket bayonet for .58 caliber Civil War era Springfield rifle muskets. Measures approximately 21” overall.
This specimen features a smooth, clean, and bright metal surface. Only a few small dark “age spots” and some light surface rust on the socket. Working locking ring and screw. Large “US” stamped on blade flat with a dot [tool mark] over, and small “S” stamp below. These marks are believed to designate actual Springfield, Mass. production.
A fine example of the M1855 socket bayonet. [jet] [ph:L]
