Overall the bayonet meas. approx. 25.25 inches long. The blade itself is 20.25 inches long with a 13.25 inch long fuller.
The blade surface shows hints of brightness but it is heavily mottled with large amounts of surface rust. As a consequence of the rust, there is also moderate pitting that is heavier in some areas. One side of the ricasso is clearly stamped “1861” while the opposite side has a good marking of “COLLINS & COMPANY, HARTFORD, CONN” in three lines.
Hilt is of cast brass with a ribbed grip and a working locking mechanism and lug mortise that shows a small casting flaw at the front edge. Brass exhibits light wear and dirt.
Leather scabbard is complete but very dry and dirty. Brass throat with frog lug and brass tip are dirty with some oxidation and rust. Leather surface shows scattered light crackling while the seam running down the back remains closed but some thread is gone.
Item needs a good cleaning but is otherwise solid. [ad] [ph:L]
