This bayonet for the British P53 Rifle Musket shows a lot of blue on the socket and neck and legitimate wear to the finish on the blade from drawing and sheathing it over the decades. The socket bears a somewhat crudely engraved “55” over a slightly smaller “237,” likely regimental rack numbers. The blade has slightly worn “E/[crown]/30” inspection stamp on the flat, near the base. The blade has a good edge and point, and shows a muted silver gray with some dark gray spotting.
The black leather scabbard is full length with the brass throat and drag in place, but showing wear to the leather with some loss of finish and some staining and age darkening to the mounts. The oval fastening stud for the belt frog is still in place on the throat. The drag show two pairs of incised lines near the upper edge.
The British Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle musket was imported huge numbers by both the north and south during the Civil War, though most closely associated with southern usage by imports through the blockade. [sr][ph:L]
