A true treat for the Harpers Ferry collector, this Type II model 1841 “Mississippi” Rifle Bayonet features a bright blade, clear stampings, and a matching scabbard in excellent condition for its age.
This sword style bayonet was manufactured in 3 iterations with distinguishing features. This piece is an excellent example of the 2nd generation of bayonet with a classic “C” shaped hilt and a 1” stud guide along the flat edge of the hilt for affixing to a factory modified m1841 Mississippi Rifle. Harper’s Ferry production reports for 1854 show that 1,639 sword bayonets for rifles, stud with guide attachment, and 40 musician bayonets were produced at the armory. During 1855, 3,179 Type II bayonets were produced for a total production of 4,858 bayonets.
The blade measures 22.5” with a width of 1.24” nearest the hilt. Overall length is 27.25” while the diameter of the ring stands at approximately 1” at its widest point. Visible markings include a stamped “4” on the flat edge of the hilt, an “S” just below the handguard, and “P B P” on the near the handguard. Blade condition is bright with very light localized surface oxidation and no discernable pitting. The spring/button attachment is complete and in excellent working condition with light surface rusting typical for its age.
The accompanying leather scabbard shows little hard use, virtually no cracking or excessive drying, and a fully intact center stitch. All 8 rivets hold the brass finial and frog attachment securely and the scabbard has no folding or crease marks.
This complete bayonet is a prime example of Harpers Ferry’s famous role in the development of American weaponry and would make a perfect addition to any Civil War collection. [cm][ph:L]
