Due to the increase in arms production during the Civil War, Springfield Amory reached out to various independent contractors. Many contractors did not have any identifying marks. However, the Amoskeag Company, housed in Manchester, New Hampshire, had a distinctive mark they stamped on both muskets and bayonets; a “U * S”. This indication is found on the bayonet here, there is a crisp “U * S” on the top flat. The bayonet measures 21” overall.
The bayonet blade is bright with only minor discoloration. The socket has more of a brown tone. The locking ring works and has original screw.
Amoskeag made up a small fraction of the contract armament production during the Civil War, making this bayonet a very rare find. [jet][ph:L]
