This is a very nice original socket bayonet with metal scabbard for the .45-70 Springfield trapdoor rifle and made for New Jersey Volunteers.

This bayonet was made after the Civil War for the trapdoor, breech-loading Springfield rifle. It looks almost identical to the Civil War M-1855 Springfield bayonet except for the diameter of the socket, which is smaller due to the decreased caliber of the rifle barrel.

This bayonet has a full-length blade and has the typical "US" stamp on the top flat; although the stamp here is light. The bayonet retains nearly all of its original blue finish. Locking ring rotates as it should.

This was made for a state contract instead of the US Government. It is accompanied by the metal scabbard that has the brass "MASS" rosette present on the leather frog at the top of the scabbard. The scabbard metal is in good condition. Leather portion remains flexible and all stitching is complete and unbroken. Stamped in the leather is “WATERVLIET / ARSENAL” as well as other inspector’s initials.
