This is an example of a regulation British military socket bayonet in well-aged condition and probably an old “barn find”. The Land Pattern Socket Bayonet was the first somewhat standardized socket bayonet utilized by the British military.
This early Land Pattern Socket Bayonet is a classic example production. The bayonet features a pronounced “shield” filed at the shank-socket juncture. The bayonet has the typical triangular blade that tapers to a thin point; here the very nub is worn down.
The bayonet measures approximately 19” long overall with 14.25” blade and a 4” socket. The bayonet has a dark brown, shallow pitted surface. It has an old and very weathered appearance, but not as bad as a “dug” relic. Socket is in good shape with complete three-step mortise. Raised band and “bridge” over mortise complete on back end. Front edge of socket shows more wear and minor edge loss. Seemingly a very thick elbow. Remnants of crown stamp on blade flat.
Overall, this is a nice example of a British Board of Ordnance Land Pattern Socket bayonet. [jet][ph:L]
