This socket bayonet with a built-in sight was designed for the French Infantry rifle "Modele 1848 a tige". In 1846, the French adopted the “tige” breech which was a stud projecting from the breech plug face to allow the ball to be rammed hard against it and swell it to bore size without crushing the powder. The caliber was .69. When the new Minie bullet was adopted in 1857, most of the tige breech guns had the breech plug projections removed. The bayonet for the rifle-musket a tige Model of 1848 has a post of brass brazed on the socket for long distance shooting; that is shooting beyond the distance that the conventional brazed sight on the front double band allows. This idea was eventually abandoned, and only minimal numbers were produced. The bayonet is in fine condition with surface staining only. The blade is 41 inches long and bears French inspection cartouches. The locking ring is in place and works perfectly. These saw use by the French in the Crimea. This bayonet will fit perfectly on the US Model 1842 musket, and many made their way over here during the Civil War. [pe][ph:L]
