This is a very nice original socket bayonet with metal scabbard for the .45-70 Springfield trapdoor rifle and made for Pennsylvania National Guard.

This bayonet was made after the Civil War for the trapdoor, breech-loading Springfield rifle. It looks almost identical to the Civil War M-1855 Springfield bayonet except for the diameter of the socket, which is smaller due to the decreased caliber of the rifle barrel.

This bayonet has a full-length blade and has the typical "U.S" stamp on the top flat. The bayonet retains nearly all of its original blue finish. Locking ring rotates as it should.

This was made for a state contract instead of the US Government. It is accompanied by the metal scabbard that has the brass "N.G.P." rosette present on the leather frog at the top of the scabbard. The contracted scabbard was stamped "Mc KENNEY'S PAT. JAN.12 1886" atop the lip, however only the last few digits remain visible. McKenney entered into contracts with Pennsylvania and New York to make scabbards for their national guard units. The scabbard has no dents and retains about 40% of the original black paint.

This is an attractive Indian Wars era Springfield trapdoor rifle bayonet from Pennsylvania.  [jet][ph:L]
