These well-made sword bayonets were produced from 1847 through 1856 for the Springfield Model 1847 Sappers & Miners musketoon, of which only 830 total arms were manufactured. The bayonet is from the second contract of 300, as it does not have fullers in the blade. The bayonet is full length and is contained in its original scabbard.
This bayonet, from the first year of production, features a 21-1/2″ double edged blade. One ricasso is marked “US” and the other with the “N. P. AMES / CABOTVILLE / 1847”. The handle is of cast brass with thick cross-guard having teardrop shaped quillons. On one side of the cross-guard is a brass ring-socket that slides onto the musketoon barrel with a rotating steel locking ring. The grip is fish-scale pattern with a swelled pommel that has a slot for the bayonet lug. One quillon is stamped “RC” and “2” on the opposite side.
Good condition. Blade retains a mottled dark, lightly cleaned, tarnished-silver patina with moderate pitting. A few of the deeper pits were lightly sanded but, have mellowed down. Edges are good with only a few very minor nicks. Manufacturer stampings are easily readable. Handle has a few minor nicks & dings, shows moderate wear and retains a medium bronze patina overall.
The scabbard is solid and complete and retains a crackled leather finish. The leather does show some crazing and wear appropriate to its age. There is one significant old crease in the scabbard just above the brass drag, and the scabbard is somewhat weak in this area. The original throat and drag remain securely attached and the original stitching on the rear seam of the scabbard remains tight and secure. One rivet is not present in the drag. The scabbard mounts have an attractive, untouched ochre patina. A wonderful bayonet. [stp] [ph:L]
