An original, Confederate made, saber bayonet. The Confederate made brass handled saber bayonet is essentially a copy of the US Model 1841/1855 saber bayonet. The bayonet is unmarked, with the exception of the number “33” stamped into the top of the hilt. A series of 6 punch dots are marked on the top flat next to the muzzle ring. The bayonet is 24 ½ inches in overall length, with a 4 5/8-inch-long cast brass hilt and a 19 7/8-inch semi-Yataghan blade. The blade is 1 inch wide at the ricasso, and has a 14 inch fuller. The brass hilt is somewhat crudely cast and is finished with 17 rings in the grip. The rings are not all completely straight with some being different widths. The muzzle ring is slightly irregular in the manufacturing process and not completely round. The ring is approximately 7/8-inch muzzle diameter. The top of the hilt has a 1-inch-deep rounded end mortise cut into it, which is roughly finished. No guide groove accompanies the mortise. Also, of note, the bayonet lug slot is approximately 3/8 inch wide. Which is smaller than the standard US made version. The rear of the pommel has period coarse finished file marks on the iron blade peen. The original locking mechanism is in place in the hilt and remains fully functional. The blade has a majority of the bright finish remaining. A very few darker discolorations scattered along the blade. The blade shows no significant flaws and a completely nick free edge. A great original sharp point is present.
A nice example of a confederate bayonet conversion for the model 1841 Mississippi that mostly likely fit a Boyle and Gamble brass adapter. [stp][ph:L]
