This is a very nice original socket bayonet with metal scabbard for the .45-70 Springfield trapdoor rifle and made for Federal Service.
This bayonet was made after the Civil War for the trapdoor, breech-loading Springfield rifle. It looks almost identical to the Civil War M-1855 Springfield bayonet except for the diameter of the socket, which is smaller due to the decreased caliber of the rifle barrel.
This bayonet has a full-length blade and has the typical "US" stamp on the top flat. The bayonet retains some of its original blue finish with scattered light surface rust overall. Locking ring in place. Hairline crack at front edge of socket.
This was made for the US Government. It has the metal scabbard with a brass "US" rosette mounted on a brass belt hook, attached by a leather frog to the top of the scabbard. The scabbard has no dents and is also covered with scattered light rust.
This is a fine Indian Wars era Springfield trapdoor rifle bayonet. [jet][ph:L]
