This British-made accoutrement is an original angular socket bayonet made for the Pattern 1853 Enfield musket. Blade was made of the best cast steel and had an iron socket welded to it.
The bayonet with its locking ring has a triangular tapered blade with fullers on each face and was carried in a brass-mounted leather scabbard. Production of the 1853 pattern socket bayonet continued throughout the life of the Enfield muzzleloader and the Snider Rifle and was finally terminated in 1875.
Bayonet is 20.5” long overall with a 17.5” long blade and a 3” long socket. Blade has three sets of stamps with two being not clear. A large “T.T” (possibly the mark of Birmingham arms maker Thomas Turner) is stamped above the two not legible marks. A “crown/ HK” is on the side of the elbow. Socket is unmarked except the face on the muzzle side is stamped “20”. Blade is very bright and smooth with scattered light spotting. The socket retains a nice plum color.
The black leather scabbard has a triangular body mounted with its original brass throat with belt hook, and tip. Leather body is in excellent condition with only very light surface wear. Stitching tight and strong. Leather totally unmarked. Brass throat and tip remain tight to the body and have a mottled tone.
A fine 1853 pattern bayonet with its original leather scabbard. [stp] [ph:L]
