This British-made accoutrement is an original angular socket bayonet made for the Model 1853 Enfield rifle musket. The Enfield bayonet has the distinction of being the first universal issue bayonet to the British Army that employed a locking device. Blade was made of the best cast steel and had an iron socket welded to it.
This bayonet has a triangular tapered blade with fullers on each face and was carried in a brass-mounted leather scabbard. This specimen is about 20.25” long overall with a 17” long blade and a 3” socket. Blade has various stampings on the top flat; British inspection stamps and “SALTER & CO.” Socket has engraved regimental or rack numbers. Blade remains mostly bright with the elbow and socket being plum toned. Locking ring is complete with screw.
A fine maker-marked Enfield rifle bayonet. [jet][ph:L]
