This is a 21” long socket bayonet with 18.5” triangular blade, hollow-ground flutes, and flat edges. There is a 3” bottom-bridged socket with three-step (T-shaped) mortise. Strong “US” stamped on blade flat.
“The American Bayonet 1776-1964” by Albert N. Hardin Jr says this specimen could alternatively be an 1862 Hews & Phillips conversion for the 1816 musket, however a note marked on the blade (black marker) suggests this bayonet is for a Remington conversion only.
The bayonet rates very good overall. The piece has a bright overall appearance with just a few small spots of oxidation on underside. [jet] [ph:L]
