This British-made accoutrement is an original angular socket bayonet made for the Pattern-1853 Enfield rifle musket. The Enfield bayonet has the distinction of being the first universal issue bayonet to the British Army that employed a locking device.  Blade was made of the best cast steel and had an iron socket welded to it.

This bayonet has a triangular tapered blade with fullers on each face. This specimen is about 20.25” long overall with a 17” long blade and a 3” socket. The blade flat is stamped with a “_W”.

Blade is clean and semi-bright with scattered age spotting. The socket and elbow are darker, retaining the original bluing. Locking ring is complete with screw.

A fine Enfield socket bayonet.  [jet][ph:L]
