This brass hilted saber bayonet is 25” long overall and carries a 20” blade. The blade is smooth metal, with good edge and point, a muted silver in color with some very thin gray spots. The brass hilt has a full-length mortice for the bayonet lug, showing a small “95” stamped in it, likely an assembly number. The locking spring and button are in place and show blue. The grip is made with 15 raised ridges. There is no transverse pin through the sides of the guard. The muzzle ring shows some dings to the sides and scratches to the front. On the underside the quillon has a flush disk finial. The muzzle ring shows some dark stains. The grip and pommel show some reddish stains as well. The blade is unmarked, but the pattern and dimensions fit one of several saber bayonets attributed to Colt revolving rifles and we note the number “4141” is stamped on the back of the quillon guard, a spot for serial or mating numbers attributed to Colt saber bayonets. The reverse of the pommel is also numbered next to the locking spring button “543,” with the “5” stamped and the last two digits very crudely, but deeply carved or scratched into the brass, indicating the bayonet was paired with a different rifle at some point, with the position of the numbers calling to mind for some the engraved numbers seen on Confederate imported British saber bayonets.
