This British-made accoutrement is an original angular socket bayonet made for the Pattern 1853 Enfield musket Type I and Type II. The Blade was made of the best cast steel and had an iron socket welded to it. This bayonet with its locking ring has a triangular tapered blade with fullers on each face and was carried in a brass-mounted leather scabbard. The scabbard is of the earlier form and was the type issued in the latter days of the Crimean War. It has a brass throat and a detached elongated "teardrop" attachment hook. The bayonet is 20.5” long overall with a 17.5” long blade and a 3” long socket. Blade is proofed and maker marked. The blade is bright and smooth with scattered light spotting. The socket retains a nice plum color mixed with plenty of original bluing and is engraved, "V.Rs. 4. 53" Which is Victoria Rifles. 4th Company. 53rd soldier.
The scabbard is the type issued in the latter days of the Crimean War. It has a brass throat and a detached elongated "teardrop" attachment device/hook. It has a triangular body mounted with its original brass tip. The Leather body is in excellent condition with only very light surface wear. The stitching tight. The leather is deeply stamped, "49. B. 80". Which is 49th Regiment Foot. Company B. 80th soldier. Additionally on the brass teardrop attachment hook is engraved, "V.Rs. 4. 53" which matches that marked on the bayonet's socket. So, this bayonet was originally issued to the 49th Regiment circa 1854 to 1856, in the Crimea and later re-issued to The Victoria Rifles of Montreal, Canada in 1862 and certainly used in the Fenian Raid in 1866. A great historic example. [pe] [ph:L]
