This is the Type 2, for use on the Pattern 1858 Naval Rifle. The British military wanted to create a dual-purpose bayonet for the rifle and settled on a combination naval cutlass & bayonet. The British military contracted for about 80,000 of these cutlass bayonets. Aside from a small contract of less than 800 delivered by Reeves of Birmingham, all of the other contractors involved used Solingen made blades in the fabrication of their bayonets.  Once the Solingen blades arrived in England, the contractors who had the contracts to produce the bayonets would assemble, hilt and deliver them to the Ordnance Department.

The gun metal gray blade measures 27" in length and it is 1.5 inches width. It has British Ordnance markings on obverse and over stamped on this are opposing "Broad Arrows" that mean condemned and available for private sale. The blade is stamped on the reverse "S & K" makers in Solingen, Germany.  There are several dark spots throughout the blade and minor chipping at the point, but it will do well with an oiling. The iron muzzle ring and iron basket are intact and in good condition. The checkered compressed leather grips are tight and intact with minor wear no loss. The grip rivets are present and the spring that affixes the bayonet firmly to the rifle's "bar-on-barrel" functions perfectly. The iron pommel is stamped "212". The scabbard is made from black leather ending with a brass tip and at the throat is a long brass frog stud. The metal has light surface rust that matches the bayonet. The seam stitching is tight, and the scabbard has a few wear holes.

Bayonets of this exact type were purchased and imported by the Confederacy during the American Civil War; of these there was under 1000. About 10,000 Enfield “Short Rifles’ of all patterns were purchased by the Confederacy in 1861 and early 1862. Among those 10,000 rifles were some P-1858 Naval Rifles. All known examples of the Confederate purchased cutlass bayonets have blades that are either unmarked or marked with Solingen maker names or logos. However, we are not selling this example as Confederate. Although it is not impossible bearing the condemned opposing Broad Arrows that it bears that it was sold commercially, or "after-market" if you will to the Confederacy. A must if you own a rare Pattern 1858 British Naval Rifle. [pe] [ph:L]
