Due to the increase in arms production during the Civil War, Springfield Amory reached out to various independent contractors.  Many contractors did not have any identifying marks.  However, the Amoskeag Company, housed in Manchester, New Hampshire, had a distinguishing mark they stamped on both muskets and bayonets; a common “US” with a distinctive star between.  This indication is found on the bayonet here - there is a crisp “U * S” on the flat face.

The blade measures 17 5/8” and the socket is 3”.  Overall, the bayonet is quite bright with signs of cleaning. The locking ring is smooth and functional equipped with original locking screw.  The elbow is unstamped but the socket is stamped with a “D” sub-inspection mark.

Amoskeag made up a small fraction of the contract armament production during the Civil War, making this particular bayonet a very rare find.  [cm][ph:L]
