This British-made accoutrement is an original angular socket bayonet made for the Model 1853 Enfield rifle musket. The Enfield bayonet has the distinction of being the first universal issue bayonet to the British Army that employed a locking device.  Blade was made high-quality cast steel and had an iron socket welded to it.

This bayonet has a triangular tapered blade with fullers on each face. This specimen is about 20.8” long overall, with a 17.5” long blade and a 3” socket. Blade has various stampings on the top flat; “M G P / J S”.  Blade remains mostly bright with the elbow showing a gray patina. Locking ring is complete with screw.

A fine bayonet for the second-most widely-used long arm of the Civil War.  [cm][ph:L]
