This 1816 pattern bayonet was supplied by Remington with their Maynard conversions of Model 1816 flintlock muskets starting in 1854 and sometimes supplied by Hewes and Phillips on M1816s altered by them for New Jersey and the U.S. government from 1861 to 1863. The overall length of this one, about 21 inches, would place it among the Hewes and Phillips Civil War deliveries, though Reilly admits they are so similar, and because H&P may have purchased parts from Remington, that Remington may have made them all. (See Reilly comments on B89 and B96.)

This bayonet uses the standard 1816 style socket with bridged T-shaped mortise and no locking ring, but has the dropped shoulders and fully fluted blade in the style of the 1835, 1855, etc. The blade bears a sharp “U.S.” at the base. The metal is smooth and bright.

A very nice example of the army’s efforts to update weapons for troops in the field.  [cm][ph:L]
