This accouterment is an original Civil War saber bayonet, maker unknown. The total length of the bayonet is 26½” long while the graceful-looking blade itself is 21½” long. This M1855 saber bayonet was issued to fit the new United States Percussion Model 1855 Rifle. Bayonet’s lines are simple and direct as the bayonet was primarily intended for issue to the Federal infantryman. Bayonet’s fullers are rounded. No maker’s mark and no stampings. The 4¾” long, all-brass cast hilt is secured on the tang by a single transverse steel pin through the guard. Hilt has the spring-loaded thumb mechanism that secures the bayonet to the rifle’s lug. Ribbed brass grip area displays a lightly cleaned finish. Flat upper grip area is stamped with “SP.” Blade surfaces are moderately bright with very light scattered mottling spots. Edge has no nicks.
The scabbard is constructed of black bridle leather and fitted with brass furniture. Furniture is tightly attached to the scabbard body with the original brass brads. Leather is intact with crazing – but no creases or breaks. The throat of the scabbard is missing but the frog is present, with scabbard riveted in place by two copper rivets and a piece of leather in place of the missing stud. The frog is also reinforced with a rivet at each corner of the body. The belt attachment portion is missing its upper half where it was mounted to a waist belt. Leather shows moderate crazing and outer finish loss. An inventory tag on the blade denotes its status as formerly in the inventory of the Old Stone House Museum of Windsor, New York.
An honest and not altogether common bayonet for the comprehensive Civil War weaponry collection. [cm][ph:L]
