This is an original socket bayonet for the .45-70 Springfield trapdoor rifle; no scabbard.
This bayonet was made following the Civil War for the trapdoor, breech-loading Springfield rifle. It looks almost identical to the Civil War M-1855 Springfield bayonet except for the diameter of the socket, which is smaller due to the decreased caliber of the rifle barrel.
This bayonet has a full-length, unmarked blade. The bayonet has a dull gray tone. On the top edges of the blade there is a 4” long area that displays numerous, very small nicks, what I would call “chatter”. Locking ring rotates as it should. A “R” is stamped on the socket off the end of the mortise.
An original Indian Wars era Springfield trapdoor rifle bayonet. [jet][ph:L]
