This is the Model 1855 socket bayonet for Springfield rifle muskets. Measures approximately 17.5” overall with a shortened 14.5” blade. This specimen features a light gray overall surface with a very few scattered small dark spots. Complete with locking ring and screw. Strong “US” stamp on blade flat.
Original black bridle leather scabbard with buff leather frog. The body is in solid condition with only surface scuffs to the black finish. The stitched seam is complete and unbroken. Brass scabbard tip is attached with four tacks. Arched buff leather frog is very nice. The frog is the seven rivet style, with eighth rivet securing the frog to the scabbard. The frog is stamped with maker’s stamp, “NEWARK, N.J.” and has an oval sub-inspector’s stamp. [jet][ph:L]
