This fine bayonet is an original American Civil War “Zouave” style saber bayonet. The total length of this bayonet is 25” while the graceful-looking blade itself is just over 20” long. Blade features unstopped fullers, small sub-inspector “S” on ricasso and a perfect un-damaged edge.
Issued with the Remington “Zouave” Rifle, a.k.a. United States Percussion Model 1863 Rifle, the saber bayonet’s lines are simple and direct. The bayonet was primarily intended for issue to the Federal infantryman.
The 4 ¾” long cast-brass hilt is secured to the blade via a single transverse steel pin through the guard. Ribbed brass grip area displays minor sand-casting roughness to enhance the grip. Upper top flat of grip area stamped with “BH” just to the rear of the guard. Blade is shiny bright. Cross guard stamped with sub-inspector marks “S” on one side and “L” on the other. Locking spring and button remain in good, operational condition.
Leather scabbard is complete and very solid. Surface is smooth and almost appears factory new. Back seam stitching is perfect the entire length of the scabbard. Brass furniture tight to the scabbard body and retains all the small brass rivets / brads at the drag and the upper mount. Brass wears a dark bronze patina. The same “L” sub-inspector mark from the cross guard is also stamped on the frog mounting button. The only noticeable spot in the scabbard is a dent in the brass about 1/2” up from the tip on the drag.
A handsome “Zouave” bayonet and its accompanying black leather scabbard are a great collectible. [stp][ph:L]
