Overall the blade meas. approx. 26.00 inches long. It has an unstopped fuller that runs approx. 17.50 inches long. The blade is in very good condition with a surface that is bright with scattered pinprick pitting on both sides. True edge does have several nicks. The obverse ricasso is marked in three lines with “U.S.N.” over “D.R.” over 1862” while the reverse ricasso has a good Ames Manufacturing mark. Crisply stamped over the Ames mark are the letters “N.J.” The leather washer is not present at base.
The grip is covered in black leather but there is no wire wrap. Leather surface shows heavy wear with large patches of leather missing. Approx. 30%. These patches have been absent for some time as the exposed wood has darkened to match the remaining leather. The brass basket and counterguard are good. Basket has two minor dents. Pommel cap is stamped with “D.R.” inspector’s initials to match the blade. Top of guard is stamped “21M” over “138.”
There is no scabbard. [AD][ph:L]
