Presented here is an original, regulation French Model 1771 angular socket bayonet, a highly desirable and historically significant edged weapon from the era of the American Revolution. This specific pattern represents a major leap in military technology, being “one of the earliest to employ” a basal rotating locking ring located at the very rear of the socket. This innovative locking mechanism positively secured the bayonet to the musket’s under-the-barrel lug, ensuring the weapon would not dislodge during the rigors of hand-to-hand combat—a reliable design that “remained in use in Europe and America until the late 19th century”.

This example shows a muted metal finish with scattered oxidation. No significant pitting is observed.  Locking ring is complete and functional. No markings are present on any part of the piece.  Blade measures 15.5” while the socket measures 2.7”.
