The M1847 was a refinement of the M1822 bayonet, imported to accompany the over 140,000 French and Belgian weapons purchased by the US Government during the Civil War. The 2.6” long socket is cut for a bottom stud. The fuller is shallow, as wide as the blade, and squared off where it terminates at the ricasso. The locking ring has a distinctive profile when viewed end-on. The M1847 also introduced the tapered blade shoulder, which the U.S. adopted for its M1855 bayonet.
The acceptance marking on the ricasso is consistent with other known Liege, Belgium makers' acceptance marks. The ricasso bears a prominent “3” with an “F” above in a diamond pattern and a star symbol below. The number “3480” is deeply stamped into the elbow. Finish is mostly bright with scattered mottling. Overall length is 21”.
A less-common variant of Civil War weapon in a nice condition – ideal for the historic arms collector. [cm] [ph:L]
