The French in 1769 added a locking ring to their going forward or new production bayonets. These were designed to fit the existing 1763 muskets with their bayonet lugs on the underside of the barrel and the 1768/70 muskets with their lugs on the top of the barrel. This example, found recently in Fredericksburg Virginia, was designed for the former. During our War for Independence against the British quantities of both the 1763 and the 1763/70 muskets and their variations came into the hands of colonial soldiers.
The bayonet has an overall length of 17 inches with a blade of 13 1/4 inches and a socket of 2 1/2 inches. A 5-inch "blood gutter" or groove runs back from the slightly blunted point. The blade is 1 inch wide at its rear. The flat of the blade has a deep French maker's or inspector's stamp. The patination is heavy with surface pitting overall. There is some chipping on the right blade side. The locking ring is intact and functions perfectly. Reference source: Armes A Feu Francaises Modeles Reglementaires 1717.1836 by Jean Boudriot. This Revolutionary War imported bayonet is rarer than the musket itself! [pe][ph:L]
