This is a U.S. Model 1816 socket bayonet, made for the Model 1816 flintlock musket. The 1816 was the most widely produced American flintlock musket. It was manufactured at the Springfield and Harpers Ferry armories and by private contractors over nearly three decades. It armed the regular army and state militias from the War of 1812 era into the Mexican War. Many of these muskets were later converted to percussion and saw service in the opening years of the Civil War, so their bayonets carried on in use well beyond the flintlock era.

The bayonet has the classic triangular blade and an offset neck joining it to the cylindrical socket. The socket retains its mortise slot for mounting on the musket barrel. Faint stamped marks are visible on the blade face near the shoulder. The steel has an even dark brown patina overall, with moderate to heavy pitting, most noticeable along the flat face of the blade. The point is intact, and the blade and neck are straight and solid.

Overall length is approximately 18 1/2 inches.

Sold without scabbard.

This is a sound, honest example of an early U.S. bayonet at an affordable price. It would make a good companion to a Model 1816 musket or a starter piece for an early American arms collection.  [cm][ph:L]
