This single-edged blade is an original American Civil War ‘Zouave’ style saber bayonet. The total length of this bayo is 25” while the graceful-looking blade itself is 20 1/16” long.  Issued with the Remington “Zouave” Rifle, a.k.a. United States Percussion Model 1863 Rifle, the saber bayonet’s lines are simple and direct. The bayonet was primarily intended for issue to the Federal infantryman.

The 4¾” long all-brass cast hilt is secured to the blade via a single transverse steel pin through the guard. Ribbed brass grip area displays minor casting roughness. Upper top flat of grip area stamped with “BH” just to the rear of the guard. Blade is shiny bright with light scattered spots of pinprick pitting and dark oxidation. Hilt stamped with sub-inspector marks “C’ and “H”.

Leather scabbard is in excellent condition. Features a strong leather body that shows very minor crazing. No breaks, flaking or weak areas. Back seam stitching very strong, All brass furniture tight to the scabbard body and retains all the small brass rivets / brads at the drag and the upper mount. Brass wears a mellow bronze patina. The handsome “Zouave” bayonet and its accompanying black leather scabbard are in very good-plus condition. A great collectible.
