Overall, this large knife meas. approx. 13.50 inches long. The round wood handle is ribbed for a better grip. The blade itself is approx. 8.50 inches long x 2.00 inches wide. A raised line runs down the center through to the point. Above the line is a shallow fuller while below it the true edge that has two small nicks.
The blade attaches to the handle by use of an iron tang. One side of the tang is stamped with the number “182” while the opposite side is marked “U.S.” over “SPRINGFIELD.” Markings are very good. Iron surfaces are bright. Wood grip is free of chips.
Thick leather scabbard is sewn and has a tooled line border. Throat is brass. Leather frog is attached to the sheath at the bottom with a riveted brass plate. Sewn to the top of the frog is a brass “bat wing” looking plate with a long pin that locks into the bottom of the frog securing it to the belt. Leather surfaces show light dirt and surface crazing.
A very nice example. [ad] [ph:m]
