The M1910 bolo knife, made at Springfield from 1910 to 1918, had been issued to aid in cutting through undergrowth and clearing fields of fire. The Model 1917 Bolo was an improvement that omitted the scabbard catch on the top of the grip. This is the Model 1917 Commercial Tolerances (C.T.) version made by both Plumb in St. Louis and the American Cutlery Company of Chicago. The markings are partially rubbed on either ricasso, but unambiguous. The obverse is stamped “U.S. MOD / [19]17 C.T.” and the reverse, “PLUM[B]/ ST/ LOU[IS]/ 19[18]” with the letters in the brackets not legible. The blades and hilt fittings were originally blackened. This one was cleaned at some point and shows fine lines from the polishing, which eliminated part of the markings. The blade shows as a muted silver-gray with some thin darker spots. The guard shows more brown. The wood grips show wear to the finger ridges showing it was used quite a bit, with small chips and dings. This comes with its correct Type-2 scabbard with olive drab webbing over a wood body with leather tip and a wire belt hook sewn to the reverse. The leather tip is clearly stamped “BRAUER. BROS. / 1918.” The web body shows a couple of small dark spots, but is generally excellent, as is the leather scabbard tip.
