The German Hirschfänger (Deer Catcher) is a long hunting dagger or cutlass. This is a nice, late 19th century Hirschfänger, with an etched blade that remains clean.
This long knife has a stag horn grip, fitted with brass. It is simple, slightly curved grip, with a gently curved "S" shaped brass cross guard that has each end terminate in a lovely Deer's hoof. There is also a brass scallop shell guard on one side. There were three acorn studs attached to one side of the grip, one of which is missing. The brass pommel is crown-shaped with an acorn topper. The blade is etched, with some delicate foliate, animal, and rifle designs running along much of the blade on both sides. No maker’s marks. The spine features a worn foliate etching.
Knife measures approximately 20” long overall with a 15” blade. Not sharpened and no edge nicks. [jet][ph:L]
