This Confederate made clipped point "side knife" recently came out of a Gettysburg area home. In exceptional condition, the weapon has an overall length of 15 inches and a blade length of 10 inches. It is the kind of knife a soldier had on his person as a practical side arm for everyday use; combat not excluded. It is not one of those massive creatures disposed of by most soldiers at the sound of the first gun.
Lightweight the blade is made from 3/16th spring steel that has been formed and filed into a clip point fighting knife. This "flat ground" blade is uniformly 1 1 /2 inches wide until the false edge and clip point begins at the 8 1/2-inch point along the top. The 10-inch blade shows no rusting or pitting just period file marks and pleasing mottling in color. The blade extends back to become hilt and slab wooden grips were applied and held firm by 2 brass pins. The grips are facetted along their length and are in perfect condition and patina. The iron hand guard 1/2 inch wide and 3 1/2 inches tall and is held securely by pressure from the wooden grips, the blade's ricasso and a touch of lead solder.
For a very close parallel to this knife please refer to the wonderful publication by Melton, Phillips and Sexton "CONFEDERATE BOWIE KNIVES". On page 172 these gentlemen show an "Alabama Side knife" attributed to Lewis Crenshaw, Hope Hill, Alabama. This weapon shares several features that our knife has, particularly the grips and iron guard. Also, the products of Boyle and Gamble share features with our weapon. Either or neither this knife has "the look" and whistles Dixie.
This is a great Confederate fighting knife in superb condition; it was Gettysburg found and until offered was in one of this country's top Confederate collections. [pe][ph:L]
