A handsome American dirk with high-quality silver mounts and a fitted silver scabbard. The slender double-edged blade of flattened diamond section is well-forged and retains good polish with light age toning and scattered staining consistent with period use. The blade seats against a scalloped silver guard with an attractive applied beaded border.
The barrel-form grip is of turned bone, framed top and bottom by silver collars and surmounted by a baluster-form silver pommel terminating in a fluted melon finial. The mounts show fine workmanship attributed to a suspected Baltimore silversmith.
The matching silver scabbard tapers to a point and is fitted with a raised oval mount near the throat. The scabbard is engraved in flowing period script with the owner's name, reading as Joseph Stimmey (possibly Kimmey), offering an avenue for further research.
Overall length: approximately 7½ inches. Condition: very good, with honest age and patina throughout. [ss] [ph:L]
