Model 1840 light artillery saber complete with its original metal scabbard. Blade and scabbard are both in fair to good condition. Made for light artillery (mounted units), the U.S. Ordnance Department contracted for 2,000 of these sabers which were delivered in 1865.

Obverse ricasso stamped with “US / J F / 1865.” Reverse ricasso of blade bears the maker’s address within a scroll “MADE BY / AMES MFg Co / CHICOPEE / MASS”. This saber has a 32¼” long, curved, single edged steel blade with a flat top and a single wide fuller. Blade is in fair overall condition and exhibits pinprick rust pitting and dark coloration overall. Original leather washer is complete. Blade bears half a dozen edge nicks. Brass pommel has a 3/8” high, domed cap and no inspector marks. Entire brass hilt, including the pommel has acquired a dark bronze patina. Knucklebow features a government inspector stamp “J.C.W.” stamped unto the center. Original grips retain its black leather wrap which is in poor, dry condition with some wear-through and flaking on the handle. Almost all of the original, brass twisted wire wrap is missing save for a small piece next to the pommel tang.

Iron scabbard has no dents and exhibits a mottled plum-colored patina. Drag shows no wear. The iron ring bands are tight and secure two sword suspension rings. Throat is unmarked. An original Ames M1840 artillery saber and scabbard at a great price.
