This item is a circa 1820 Boston Militia Dragoon Helmet, a very unique & rare tarred leather helmet (patterned after the US Regulation Dragoon Helmet of May 1833). A very finely constructed helmet, on the face is a cockade of leather with an 1820 eagle one piece militia button, a brass eight pointed star, identical to the New Boston helmet in O’Donnell’s book. With a tarred leather, brass rimmed visor. The original leather chin strap is present on the face with the same two matching one piece eagle side buttons. Coming out of the cockade on the front are the two original ostrich feathers, giving a very dramatic Dragoon look. The back edge is trimmed with a 1 inch buckled leather adjustment belt, with gold embossing on the belt. The interior has the original leather sweatband, with a brown linen lining showing a lightly visible old brown ink name and a “3”, probably the size.

This early, unique and dramatic helmet is the only one known. Accompanied by pictures from two books.  [gj][ph:L]
