The drawn sword meas. approx. 38.50 inches from point to pommel. The blade itself meas. approx. 33.00 inches long with a 20.00 inch stopped fuller. The blade surface is semi-bright with light scattered mottling on the top third. This same area has some light scattered pitting also. The obverse ricasso is etched with a Star of David and stamped with a brass circle with a mark that reads “PROVED.” Above this is a panoply of arms, a small spread-winged eagle and an “E PLURIBUS UNUM” riband with interconnecting scroll work. The reverse ricasso is etched with an oak leaf above three horizontal lines followed by a panoply of arms, a block “US” and a panoply of flags all connected by scrollwork. The edge of the blade is good but does have several scattered small rough areas. Though not maker marked, on page 411 of his book “CIVIL WAR ARMY SWORDS” author John Thillmann states that this sword is almost certainly made by W. Walscheid in Solingen, Germany.

The detailed iron hilt features a guard and knuckle bow with a delicately cast single wide sweeping band with cutout British rifle regiment Infantry Officer’s crown and horn at center of the guard. Hilt features a grooved, wooden handle wrapped in gray sharkskin that shows light wear. Skin is tightly bound with three brass wires, one twisted wire flanked by two that are straight. Iron pommel is of the tiered dome variety. There is an iron backstrap running from the dome down the grip to an iron ferrule at bottom. The iron surface of the hilt shows a light coat of surface rust.

Iron scabbard is free of dents and is complete with both of the iron rings and mounts. The underlying surface of the scabbard is bright but it is heavily mottled over the entire surface with moderate pitting throughout.

An interesting import sword. [ad] [ph:L]
