MILLARD MODEL 1860 LIGHT CAVALRY SABER

$375.00 SOLD

Item Code: 2021-02

This saber was referred to as the model 1860 “light cavalry” saber by the US Ordnance Department.

Weighing just less than four pounds, the slightly curved blade measures approximately 34 ½” long. Marked on the ricasso of the blade is the maker’s name on one side and the inspector’s initials and date on the other. Pitting in this area obscures some of the stampings. “MILLARD” and some of the “CLAYVILLE, NY” address can be seen. “US / W.E.H. / 18__” is all that can be made out on the other side. Blade is pewter color heavily covered with darker spotting. Retains only pieces of leather. No visible nicks along the edge.

The three-branch hand guard wears a heavy and dark patina. The wood, ribbed grip with center swell is all that remains; no leather wrap, no wire twist. Cavalry saber is fitted with a brass pommel cap of the Phrygian design common on all M1860 sabers. Inspector’s initials are found on the brim.

Strong, steel scabbard is unadorned and is covered with surface rust. Sword mounts retain the suspension rings. Scabbard is undented and the drag has no visible inspector stamp.

This saber was kept in a bad environment hurting the condition, but it is an American-contract M-1860 light cavalry sword! Priced right.  [jet] [ph:L]
