Maker mark: reverse ricasso, “C. Roby & Co. / W. Chelmsford,/ Mass.” Medium bright blade, measuring 32” in length, 1.125” in width at base. Blade etched with handsome vine & leaf, a Roby trademark, clean & distinct, with “US” appearing at mid-point on the reverse. Slight traces of pitting near tip Lower edge exhibits half dozen slight dings on the upper portion. Else VG plus. Washer present. Brass hilt assembly tight and nearly symmetrical. Slight inward dent to the “US” cut between the middle and outer branch. Medium coppery patina. Original sharkskin grip exhibits wear & light worn spot along the underside. Wire wrap slightly loose, though completely in place. Else VG.
Steel scabbard jappaned black, with brass throat, carrying mounts, & throats. Company marking “C. Roby & Co. / W. Chelmsford, Mass.” is stamped on the upper mount. Jappaned body displays a few small unobtrusive rust blisters, as well as two minor dents. Drag screw is missing. Else VG.
Overall, an extremely solid Roby staff sword, attractive and very nicely priced. [jp] [ph:L]
